CRITIC’S PICK:
New Paintings by Raphael Bahindwa, Rialto Center for the Arts — SCAD grad Raphael Bahindwa, a visual artist in figurative painting, says his work reflects the current situation in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo, referencing the pervasive issue of child labor in a country replete with mineral resources.
Working with mixed media, Bahindwa’s technique involves layering acrylic on canvas and then adding images in oil to the surface. Congolese artifacts such as traditional masks and arrows used by warriors are sometimes rendered; the style has been described as “Afro-futuristic.” Bahindwa likes to aim high, claiming inspiration from the likes of Salvador Dalí and Jean-Michel Basquiat. — Kevin C.
