After dropping a steady string of singles via Bandcamp over the past year-and-change, the somewhat mysterious three-piece outfit CHEW, which features members of local bands DAMS and Swank Sinatra and marries programmed soundscapes with live instrumentation, finally assembled a proper debut with the 3D EP, released in May. The six-song recording showcases a unique, playful sound simultaneously informed by sweeping prog, fuzzed-out funk, and methodical post-rock. On steadfastly psychedelic tunes like the dense, evocative “Bianca Vasquez (Trash Hump Island Adventure)” and the mind-bending, beat-heavy “Melt,” CHEW’s grooves run deep.
