CL RECOMMENDS

CL Critic Tony Paris Recommends: Fans of Glenn Phillips get a double holiday treat this year when the guitarist plays the intimate Studio Theatre at City Springs Theatre in Sandy Springs, Thursday, Dec. 29. The performance comes only weeks after his Annual Day After Thanksgiving concert in Midtown Atlanta.
Recognized by the late Lowell George of Little Feat as “the most amazing guitarist I’ve ever seen,” Phillips has been entertaining Atlanta audiences for over fifty years, starting with the Hampton Grease Band, which he founded with the late Col. Bruce Hampton while they were both attending Dykes High School. Phillips’ longstanding career is chronicled in the autobiography, Echoes which, when purchased from his website glennphillips.com, includes the previously-unreleased CD, The Dark Parade, and the DVD, “The Lost At Sea 40thAnniversary Live Show,” recorded at Eddie Owens’ Red Clay Theatre in Duluth.
The Glenn Phillips Band’s performance is part of the new Studio Series presented by Steve Grossman (who used to own Steve’s Live Music in Sandy Springs) at City Springs Theatre, in an effort to highlight prominent Atlanta-area artists, with Heather Luttrell (Jan. 19) and Michelle Malone (March 23) also scheduled. Reserved seating tickets to the Glenn Phillips Band event may be purchased here. Special note: all of the seats situated behind the reserved tables and chairs, are elevated, theater-style seating, meaning there’s not a bad seat in the house. — TP

From the venue:

Admired by Frank Zappa and R.E.M. alike, Glenn Phillips’s guitar skills have brought him a long way from the local Hampton Grease Band. He has played with everyone from Bo Diddley to Talking Heads. His music defies classification and is widely praised for its emotional impact. Tickets start at $20.

City Springs thanks The Select and the Sandy Springs Arts Foundation for their support of our 2022-23 season.
