CL RECOMMENDS
CL Critic Jessica Goodson Recommends:  The first time I heard Stay Here it felt like I was listening to Bowling For Soup meets All American Rejects. A perfect example of a modern take on the 2010’s emo rock, their March single “Crash Landing perfectly encapsulates their nostalgic but current sound with its strong vocals and alt-rock guitar riffs. Also playing this show is another personal favorite in the local emo-indie rock world, Athens’ Elijah Johnston. Johnston is known for his melodic guitar driven songs and personal lyricism. His 2022 album Day Off’’ is serious but also playful with songs like “Greatest Hits” and “Horse Girl,” you can’t help but sing along to. Stay Here and Johnston are supporting Brooklyn’s seven-piece funk group Cool Cool Cool and Virginia’s Downhaul in Purgatory at The Masquerade. - JG

From the venue:

Purgatory at The Masquerade.

Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, Stay Here is a four-piece rock outfit consisting of Parker Phillips (vocals and guitar), Julian Chawla (guitar and vocals), Julian Sosa (bass and vocals), and Rene Acuna (drums). The band formed in late 2016 after existing in its previous iteration as a pop-punk band during its founding members” high school years. Though the members of the band wasted no time making Stay Here known to Atlanta’s music scene and the DIY scene at large with the release of their debut EP Blindfolds and multiple touring stints in support of the release, the band has since grown exponentially in stylistic maturity as much as it has in popularity during its relatively short tenure. At the core of Stay Here’s music is heartfelt, honest songwriting characterized by anthemic choruses with infectious vocal melodies and shimmering harmonic textures, seamlessly blurring the lines between indie rock, alternative, emo, and early 2000’s pop-punk.
