CRITIC’S PICK: It’s a doubleheader of veteran, iconoclastic Americana singer/songwriters boasting catalogs so deep with unique, often humorous folk/rock that no one can predict what they’ll pull out for any show. These friends are also witty raconteurs, charming audiences for decades with their between song patter, so this fertile pairing will display their easygoing stage banter as well as some of their finest tunes. Should be fun. — Hal Horowitz

From the venue:

One was Bob Hope’s favorite altar boy, the other was the son of a preacher man who played tambourine at his father’s revivals.

One was a professional boxer who boxed Robert Duran on national TV, the other was an ex-high school wrestler (98-pound class).

One met Elvis Presley (who hugged his sister for far too long), the other was raised in Elvis’ hometown among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured the young Elvis generations before.

Similar backgrounds yet different paths. Paul Thorn and Steve Poltz have a 20+ year friendship and are taking it on the road and in the ring together this Spring for a multi-city tour, surely to bring love, laughter, and mischief along with them. Equal parts humor, poignant stories, and expert musicianship, these two storytellers with contagious smiles will put on a show that will make you laugh one minute and cry the next.

Paul Thorn’s innovative and impressive career, filled with bluesy, rocking, and Southern American roots music, resonates with audiences everywhere. Hailing from Tupelo, Mississippi, his journey reflects originality, eccentricity, and remarkable talent. With TV appearances, NPR features, and Billboard chart success, Paul Thorn’s latest album, Never Too Late To Call, recorded at Sam Phillips Studio in Memphis and produced by Grammy winner Matt Ross-Spang, is seven years in the making.

Steve Poltz, a Nashville-based troubadour with a diverse fanbase, started his musical journey in San Diego and gained national recognition by co-writing Jewel’s hit “You Were Meant For Me.” His solo career features albums like One Left Shoe, Dreamhouse, Folk Singer, and Shine On. He’s celebrated for his witty acoustic style, earning comparisons to Todd Snider and Jackson Browne. His latest album, Stardust & Satellites (2022), was produced by Oliver Wood and Jano Rix of The Wood Brothers.
