City Nature Challenge Kick-off

Friday April 26, 2024 10:00 AM EDT
Cost: Free

From the venue:

Have you ever noticed a plant, animal, or fungus in the forest and wished you knew what it was? The annual City Nature Challenge takes place on April 26-29, 2024 and you are invited to join Ranger Jonah for a kick-off event. Download the free iNaturalist app on your smartphone and join Ranger Jonah to learn how to use the app and participate in City Nature Challenge. Then we’ll fan out along the trails, snapping photos and learning.

Since 2020, DeKalb County Park Naturalists have partnered locally with Fernbank Museum of Natural History to promote the City Nature Challenge, an event that encourages individuals and families to document species of plants, animals and fungi found in nature using the iNaturalist app. The Atlanta City Nature Challenge’s goal is to connect people to nature and help give valuable insight into what species call Atlanta home.

The best part of this challenge is that it is available to EVERYONE! Participants do not have to be able to identify the organisms they find in order to join the City Nature Challenge effort. We encourage you to take part in photographing native plants and animals to showcase Georgia’s natural wildlife without the worry of identifying their species.

Bring a smartphone (preferably one for each participant), wear appropriate footwear, dress for the weather, and bring a refillable water bottle. Meet at the South Peachtree Creek trailhead near the Mason Mill Tennis Center (McConnell Dr & Mason Mill Rd). All ages are welcome.
