CRITIC’S PICK: Cabaret, Actor’s Express - The garish world of Berlin’s hedonistic underground during the onset of World War II is cunningly depicted in the musical ‘Cabaret,’ first staged in 1966 with an adaptation by playwright Joe Masteroff under the direction of Hal Prince. Add composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb and you’ve got yourself a musical that’s survived successfully ever since. Lead character Sally Bowles, a chanteuse at the sleazy Kit Kat Club, has been played over the years by the likes of Natasha Richardson, Emma Stone, Brooke Shields, Michelle Williams, and Sienna Miller. Callie Johnson plays the role of Bowles in the Atlanta production, which is directed by Freddie Ashley. “We often use entertainment to distract us from the difficulties and horrors of the world, and we do this at our own peril,” he says. “So, the play hooks us with its naughty and forbidden fun, but then asks us to confront our individual and collective responsibility to stand up to the forces that would destroy us.” - Kevin C. Madigan

From the venue:

Cabaret
Actor’s Express transforms into the Kit Kat Club, a decadent hotspot in anything-goes 1929 Berlin. An idealistic young American meets an eclectic circle of Berliners, most notably Sally Bowles, the outrageous chanteuse determined to keep the party going at all costs. But everything is destined to change as the storm clouds of war gather on the horizon. Full of memorable classic songs like “Wilkommen,” “Mein Herr,” “Maybe This Time” and, of course, the title song, Cabaret is one of the great masterpieces of the American stage.
