Elsewhere Shakespeare presents Antony y Cleopatra
From the venue:
A bilingual adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy of love and global politics from Elsewhere Shakespeare
The story of the doomed love between the Roman general Mark Antony and the Egyptian queen Cleopatra is a story of clashing cultures: the austere, militaristic world of the Roman west and the luxurious, cosmopolitan world of the Egyptian east. In Antony y Cleopatra, the cultural differences are placed linguistically front and center. The Roman characters in this new adaptation speak Shakespeare's original English, while the Egyptian characters are depicted as native Spanish speakers. In Antony y Cleopatra, the Egyptian characters only speak English when in conversation with Romans. About 15% of the dialogue in this two-hour minimalist production will be in Spanish.
This event will be set in the intimate Porpentine space, just off our lobby. Seating will be very limited.
