Through Sun., Dec. 1CRITIC’S PICK: Hamlet, Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse - “I see dead people…” The Bard’s longest play was written circa 1600 and was originally titled ‘The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.’ It has been staged almost continuously since that time but was not always popular. In 1768, the French philosopher Voltaire wrote, “It is (a) vulgar and barbarous drama, which would not be tolerated by the vilest populace of France or Italy... One would imagine this piece to be a work of a drunken savage,” while Russian author Isaac Asimov lamented, “I don’t see why people admire that play so. It is nothing but a bunch of quotations strung together.” A bit harsh, methinks, considering the play’s vast impact over the centuries. Directed by Andrew Houchins, the Playhouse production has Mary Ruth Ralston playing the prince; David Rucker is Polonius; Ophelia is portrayed by Gabi Anderson and Kelly Chris is Gertrude. The audience is invited to a post-show Q&A on Sunday, Nov. 17. - Kevin C. Madigan

From the venue:

The secret midnight utterings of a Kingly ghost set events in motion that seal the tragic fate of Denmark’s royal family. In the midst of everything, Hamlet grapples with overwhelming thoughts about life, love, death, and revenge trying to make sense of it all. Experience why this is often considered the greatest tragedy and play of all time.
