CRITIC’S PICK: Amélie, Horizon Theatre - Based on the 2001 hit indie film, the musical adaptation of Amélie premiered at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September 2015. At the time, the San Francisco Chronicle’s reviewer wrote that “wit crackles and charm fills the house… in this seamless blend of visual, narrative and performance delights.” Daniel Messé (of the Brooklyn band Hem) wrote the lyrics with songwriter Nathan Tysen; Messé composed the music as well, and playwright Craig Lucas wrote the book. The UK production in 2019 made various changes to the plot, and those revisions have been used in subsequent stagings, including the one at Horizon. The local show is directed and choreographed by Heidi McKerley, and Holt McCarley directs the music. - Kevin C. Madigan
