CL RECOMMENDS
CRITIC’S PICK: Steve Baskin and the Fourteen, The Third Door. Baskin’s music is inspired by the pop, rock-and-roll, country, and blue-eyed soul genres, and, as an unabashed romantic, my favorite of their originals are those heavy on the blue-eyed soul. Songs like We Thought We Were Grown and I Believe in You are reminiscent of the 70’s smooth groove of Bobby Caldwell or Bob Welch (and they do an embellished cover of Sentimental Lady that is better than the original). But whatever they pull out, mandolin and pedal steel add another layer of texture to pull at your heart-strings with unique lyrics made for grownups who’ve been around the block. I am often amazed (and appalled) at the excellent local music available for so little money, and this performance will be worth quite a bit more than what you are paying.-- Shannon Marie Tovey
