CRITIC’S PICK: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Symphony Hall—Folk singer Welch’s striking, acoustic 1996 debut was a head-turning change of pace for a major label release, one that promised great things from this new voice. Over the decades those initial reactions were proven correct as she, with partner David Rawlings, have recorded about a dozen beautifully crafted rustic discs, mostly on their own label. As of the recently released Woodlands, Welch’s first with original songs in 14 years, they have returned and brought a fuller sound with them. The gorgeous album is filled with subtle, mostly unplugged instrumentation, assisted by pedal steel and fiddle. It’s a perfect set to support this tour where their popularity now allows them to play this relatively expansive venue. — Hal Horowitz

From the venue:

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings’s rich and remarkable career spans over twenty years, and they are pillars of the modern acoustic music world. Their latest release, All The Good Times, a collection of ten acoustic covers by Bob Dylan, John Prine, Elizabeth Cotten, and Norman Blake, as well as new arrangements of traditional songs, won the 2021 Best Folk Album GRAMMY. Recently, Welch and Rawling’s 2011 album, the GRAMMY-nominated The Harrow & The Harvest, described by the Washington Post as “Welch”¦at her haunting, heart-aching best,” was released for the first time ever on reel-to-reel tape via their own Acony Records.
