Whiskey Myers w/ JJ Grey & MOFRO at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre

CRITIC’S PICK: Whiskey Myers, JJ Gray & MOFRO, Ameris Bank Amphitheatre—This double-barreled lineup is headlined by tough Southern rockers Whiskey Myers who have been cranking out their guitar heavy, bluesy country for the better part of two decades. They’ve been doing it independently too, releasing their last four albums on their own Wiggy Thump label. Lynyrd Skynyrd comparisons are inevitable because of a vocalist that channels the spirit of Ronnie Van Zant. But their songs are good, they play ‘em with fire and they know how to deliver a rugged show. Southern soulman JJ Gray has also been carrying the torch for the music of his Florida home base for his entire career, albeit in a more swampy, R&B mode. That makes this an impressive concert with two solid bands, either of which could headline. — Hal Horowitz
