CRITIC’S PICK: If you’ve never attended a Silver Scream Spook Show (SSSS), you’re missing one of Atlanta’s coolest fun-filled live events, which also serves as the perfect introduction to a classic horror film. Hosted by the incomparably macabre Professor Morte, every SSSS production feature magical gags, dancing damsels and ghoulish humor suitable for children and adults alike. For this edition, the SSSS is paired with Son of Frankenstein from the Universal Pictures vault of horror cinema. Released in 1939 and directed by Rowland Lee, Son of Frankenstein stars Basil Rathbone as Wolf von Frankenstein, son of the original monster-maker; Josephine Hutchinson as Baroness Elsa von Frankenstein; Boris Karloff in his third and final appearance as The Monster; Bela Lugosi as Ygor; and Lionel Atwill as Inspector Krogh. Injected with endearingly over-the-top acting, gothic expressionist stage sets and humor both witting and not so much make Son of Frankenstein a real treat to watch, especially with a crowd of similarly demented horror film fans. – Doug DeLoach

Son of Frankenstein (1939)
Baron Wolf von Frankenstein (Basil Rathbone) is determined to prove the legitimacy of his father’s scientific work, thus rescuing the family name from disgrace. With the help of Ygor (Bela Lugosi), a grave robber, Wolf successfully reanimates the monster (Boris Karloff) his father originally brought back from the dead. But when several villagers are killed mysteriously, Wolf must find the culprit in order to vindicate his creation, or face the possibility that he may be responsible.
