CRITIC’S PICK: Mon. Feb. 10 - The Bad Plus, City Winery— Those following the abrupt, often radical musical and personnel twists and turns of this veteran broadminded jazz outfit (their debut was a quarter century ago) know that the initial piano-based three-piece has morphed to a piano-less quintet. Sax and guitar replace the keys but the band’s occasionally avant-garde, often experimental and exploratory approach has remained. Think a contemporary Weather Report-styled unit and you’re close. There aren’t many of those around, so these guys fill a unique space in the progressive jazz space. Kudos to the venue for booking a band as unusual as The Bad Plus in an intimate listening atmosphere perfect for experiencing their unpredictable yet creatively constructed improv flights. —Hal Horowitz
