From the venue:
Long before movies were invented, pottery was a powerful narrative medium. In a lecture titled “Epics on Earthenware: How Small Pots Tell Big Stories - and Why,” Dr. Nigel Spivey, senior lecturer in Classical Art & Archaeology at the University of Cambridge, will explore the ingenious ways in which vessels from the Indigenous Americas and ancient Greece convey stories that are as fabulous, complex, emotive, and satisfying as a Hollywood blockbuster. And it poses the question: what was the point?
Nigel Spivey was also author and presenter of the major BBC/PBS television series, How Art Made the World: A Journey to the Origins of Human Creativity (2004).
The John Laszlo, M.D. Excalibur Lecture was established through the generosity of Dr. Laszlo’s family and friends in honor of his retirement from the American Cancer Society.
