Squirrel Nut Zippers: Jazz From The Back

CRITIC’S PICK
Thurs., April 10
Squirrel Nut Zippers, City Winery—It has been nearly two decades since North Carolina’s retro swing/New Orleans traditionalists Zippers scored double platinum with their Hot album. The group’s membership has changed radically since, with only Jimbo Mathus the constant participant. It has also been five years since any new release but this retro music isn’t tied to any contemporary style, so their sound remains consistent regardless of who is in the current incarnation. It’ll be frisky, frothy fun as the horns kick up a 30s era party atmosphere which will challenge the dancers to find some space between the chairs at the Winery to let loose when they break into their biggest song, “Hell.” — Hal Horowitz

ABOUT
City Winery Atlanta presents Squirrel Nut Zippers: Jazz From The Back live on Thursday, April 10th at 6:00pm, part of a 2 show series! See both shows here.
The Squirrel Nut Zippers began their musical journey in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the mid 1990’s, as a musician’s escape from the cookie cutter world of modern rock radio at the time. Jimbo Mathus along with wife Katherine Whalen and drummer Chris Phillips formed the band as a casual musical foray playing for friends and family around town. It wasn’t long before the band (which had grown in size) developed a reputation for pioneering a quirky mix of jazz chords, folk music, and punk rock leanings and attracted a national audience. After the bands sophomore release Hot became a surprise commercial success, the group went on to sell more than 3 million albums between 1995 and 2003.
