The Polaris Project (with Andrew Finn Magill)

CRITIC’S PICK
Thurs., Feb. 27
The Polaris Project, Tzadik Performing Arts Center—Andrew Finn Magill is an eclectic artist who is a musical scholar and lecturer but tonight performs as violinist with his Polaris Project. His synthesis of jazz, light funk and world music is supported by keyboards, drums and bass. The result is not far from the less electronic work of Jean Luc Ponty or Michael Urbaniak, two string players who also pressed their trained ears to a fresh fusion of various sounds. Magill’s talents on violin bring in some bluegrass and classical elements, but generally stick to genre pushing in the fields of jazz and world beat. Tasty and often riveting.— Hal Horowitz
