This project is at the intersection of dance and Black queer theory. Through a mixture of solo and group work, this project will use Thomas DeFrantz’s theory of queer corporeal orature to explore how house dance uses Black queer aesthetics to disrupt oppressive narratives of Blackness including Black queer identity. These oppressive narratives include Western binaries such as normal vs. abnormal, mind vs. body, and performer vs. audience. These aesthetics include polyrhythmic movement, fluid socialities, and unrepressed sensualities. This project aims to draw attention to art’s capability to create and preserve marginalized cultures/identities. It also hopes to inspire authentic and critical representations of Black queer culture in the broader community.
Recommended parking for Schwartz Center events is the Fishburne Parking Deck (free for events after 6 p.m. and on weekends).
