Samantha Crain

CRITIC’S PICK:
Wed., July 9
Samantha Craine, Jess Nolen, The EARL — Native American singer/songwriter Crain has been releasing idiosyncratic indie folk/rock albums since 2009. A series of car accidents put her career on hold for a while, but she returned in 2020 with the acclaimed A Small Death that addressed psychological issues which developed during her recovery. Since then she recorded a stunning cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” and has just released a new album in May, Gumshoe, which reviewers have correctly described as “haunting.” Opener Nolan, solo after touring as a supporting musician for a clutch of mostly female Americana headliners, has a similarly delicate, introspective, often darker approach. — Hal Horowitz
