Post Animal, The Slaps, The EARL - Now four albums into their stop-start career, Chicago’s six-piece Post Animal seems to be back for good. Part pop, part experimental, and often tinted by psychedelia, the band is nothing if not eclectic. Synths and smooth vocals lean towards a commercial sound, but shift gears to a more progressive approach. Somewhere between is their sweet spot yet, like the best artists, the sound is a moving target that more often than not connects with strong melodies, Beach Boys-styled harmonies and quirky playing. The opening trio treads similar territory, combining easy flowing tunes with indie rock edginess. — Hal Horowitz
