Murmurs in Time—Third Coast Percussion and Salar Nader, tabla
CRITIC’S PICK
Fri., Oct. 17
When Zakir Hussain died in December 2024, the world lost one of the greatest Indian tabla players of all time. The eldest son of tabla master Alla Rahka, Hussain was a child prodigy who developed into one of India’s most revered performing artists over a career spanning five decades. Just before he passed away, Hussain was commissioned by Third Coast Percussion, a Chicago-based quartet, to compose a work, which became ‘Murmurs in Time.’ Sadly, Hussain never heard ‘Murmurs in Time’ performed for a live audience.
This Friday, as part of Emory University’s Candler Concert Series, Third Coast Percussion — Sean Connors, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, and David Skidmore – and Hussain disciple Salar Nader will perform ‘Murmurs in Time’ at the @Schwartz Center for Performing Arts, along with new commissions by Jessie Montgomery, Tigran Hamasyan and Jlin, plus a solo set by Nader. – Doug DeLoach

“Propulsive, exciting, and full of gorgeous sounds all the way through” —New York Classical Review
The late Zakir Hussain composed Murmurs In Time as a commission for Third Coast Percussion, combining the beauty and complexity of Hindustani classical music with the singular sound world of this Grammy Award–winning percussion ensemble. Salar Nader—tabla virtuoso and protégé of Hussain—will perform with Third Coast Percussion in honor of the composer's profound legacy. This special concert presentation also includes newly commissioned works from Jessie Montgomery, Tigran Hamasyan, and Jlin.
