The local film series "Soul Cinema Sundays" presents "Judas and The Black Messiah" to commemorate the last day of Black August and Fred Hampton's 77th bday! Hampton was born on August 30, 1948. The Oscar-nominated film depicts Hampton's core activism and betrayal that led to his assassination on December 4, 1969. He came to prominence in his late teens and early twenties and is best known for his charismatic organizing style and ability to organize across racial lines. The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Fred Hampton. The star-studded cast also includes LaKeith Stanfield, Jesse Plemons, Dominque Fishback, and Martin Sheen. The movie was nominated for 6 Academy Awards. Since its release, it's been cited as one of the best films of the 2020s.
