CRITIC’S PICK:

The Taming of the Shrew, Atlanta Shakespeare Company — A headstrong woman named Katherina is taunted and deprived of food and sleep by Petrucio, a fortune-hunter, in order to make her a more compliant bride. Things get complicated. It’s a comedy written circa 1591, so you’ll have to cut it some slack. ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ has had multiple adaptations. Notable examples are Cole Porter’s ‘Kiss Me Kate’ and movies such as John Wayne’s ‘McLintock’ and the high-school comedy ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ as well as the original film of the play with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

Director Rachel Frawley previously tackled the Bard at the ASC with ‘Comedy of Errors’ and has also worked as an actor, writer, producer and “intimacy professional” at local theaters like Aurora and Stage Door. Frawley plus cast and crew will take questions from the audience after the show on Sunday, Sep. 21. — Kevin C. Madigan

From the venue:

The wild and unwed Katherine is thrown together with the boisterous and charismatic bachelor Petruchio and thus begins Shakespeare’s fiercest and most controversial battle of the sexes. This high-spirited comedy will have you laughing in the aisles and then discussing the themes on the car ride home. Featuring an all female+ cast!

Attention attendees of the Sunday September 14 performance only: Atlanta Streets Alive will close down Peachtree Street from noon to 6pm that day.

With each production from the late 80’s until 1999, ASC’s core aesthetic became a little clearer. What emerged over time was a company of artists dedicated to a radically pure approach to the text. Each syllable is examined and reexamined for clues as to form, meaning, and original intent. What’s ... | more...
