Broadway in Atlanta presents The Outsiders (Opening Night)

The Outsiders, Fox Theatre — This new musical is adapted from S.E. Hinton’s controversial novel about feuding gang members in Tulsa, OK, published in 1967. At the time the book was banned from a number of U.S. schools and libraries due to its depiction of violence, smoking and drinking, profane language and maladjusted families. Conversely, ‘The Outsiders’ went on to become part of the English curriculum at many educational establishments. A film version by Francis Ford Coppola in 1983 featured up-and-coming actors such as Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, and Rob Lowe.
The stage musical opened at the La Jolla Playhouse in early 2023 and went on to win four Tony awards the following year; a film of the musical is said to be in the works. “Everyone involved, including executive producer Angelina Jolie, seems to be approaching the project in good faith to the legacy of the original (and Coppola’s film), with genuine curiosity in wringing something new (and lyrical) out of these repressed teenagers and now old-timey slang,” wrote Adrian Horton in ‘The Guardian.’ — Kevin C.
