Dirty Three
CRITIC'S PICK:
Sat., March 28
Dirty Three, Terminal West - This genre-pushing, often avant-garde, instrumental Australian trio of guitar, drums and violin (occasionally enhanced with other musicians) has been on-again/off-again (mainly the latter), since their auspicious 1994 debut. Fronted by wildman violinist Warren Ellis during time off from working with longtime partner Nick Cave, the band released Love Changes Everything, two years ago. Their first album in a decade, it will likely be referenced for much of this performance. The disc's six longer pieces, they can't be considered songs, all share the album's title, differentiated with Roman numerals l-Vl. Each seems improvised with suppressed dark, ghostly overtones that are creepy, portentous and ominous. How this translates live is unclear but longtime fans know to expect the unexpected. - Hal Horowitz
