Anthony Gomes
CRITIC'S PICK:
Fri., April 10
Anthony Gomes, Smith's Olde Bar - Canadian blues rocker Gomes has topped the blues charts multiple times in the past 25 years with a churning, pummeling, flamboyant attack. A flashy volume enhanced style, emphasized by the title of his most recent release Praise the Loud, is more rock than blues, emphasized by a grainy voice that further complements the cranked-up approach. One track, named "Rock and Roll Bluesman" where he shouts "I ain't ashamed of who I am," dismisses any qualms he might get from more traditional blues lovers complaining about those harder-edged qualities that make comparisons closer to AC/DC than Buddy Guy. Come prepared for high-voltage intensity from a shredder who has been perfecting his "but this goes to 11" act for a quarter century. - Hal Horowitz
