Kevin Morby
CRITIC'S PICK:
Sun., June 14
Kevin Morby, Liam Kazar, Variety Playhouse - Indie singer/songwriter Morby meshes a rootsy vibe with pop strains for calm, easygoing music that hits a sweet folk/rock spot. Morby's low-key, everyman style shuffles along, reminiscent of a JJ Cale sensibility, although his songs are less country and more slanted to an indie approach. His tunes float and flutter like the titular insect in "A Coat of Butterflies," landing gently on the ears. Prepare to hear new music from "Little Wide Open," released last month. Opener Kazar adds a bit of smooth jazz to his "quietly confident" (the press release's description) similarly-styled sound and will play tracks from his new, second album. - Hal Horowitz
