Talk Title:
Maria W. Stewart and the Roots of Black Political Thought
In this talk, Dr. Waters explores the life and writings of Maria W. Stewart (1803-1879), “the first Black woman political writer” in the United States and a foundational voice of Black feminist thought. Throughout the 18th century, African American lecturers, ministers, poets, essayists, and activists set the stage for the organized civil rights movement to follow. Luminaries such as Prince Hall, Phillis Wheatley, and the Reverend Thomas Paul built a community on Beacon Hill in Boston where they were determined to bring the liberal ideals of the American Revolution to fruition for all people.
