Steel Pulse, Original Wailers featuring Al Anderson, The Eastern - One of the few UK-based reggae bands to sound as authentic as anything out of Jamaica, Steel Pulse with founding frontman David Hinds (percussionist Selwyn Brown being the only other original member still aboard) has been a force in the genre since its classic 1975 debut. That's over 50 years of roots reggae and nine GRAMMY® -nominated albums (they won in 1987), all balancing pop lyrics with more politically-oriented ones, specifically on "Ku Klux Klan," a song as relevant today as when it was released nearly 50 years ago. As for the "original Wailers," be careful thinking anyone other than New York City-born guitarist Al Anderson is in a band so misleadingly named. You'll hear plenty of Marley-era tunes, probably played well, but there isn't much "original" Wailer membership to be found. - Hal Horowitz

“We just can’t ignore the politics, because every life and soul that’s born on this earth is a political manoeuvre for someone, at some stage”, Hinds explains. “From a spiritual aspect, it’s really an upliftment through facing reality – what’s out there. We deal with positive spirits. It means putting aside the guns, the drugs and all of the things that are ailments of society – especially the black communities right now”.
STEEL PULSE have always taken their causes to heart, filing a $1 million class action lawsuit againstNew York City’s Taxi & Limousine Commission. The group charged that cabbies refused to pick up blacks and Rastafarians throughout the streets ofNew York.
