Percussion Ensemble Concert - Steve Reich at 90!
CRITIC’S PICK
Thu., Apr. 9
One of history’s greatest American composers, Steve Reich, celebrates his 90th birthday this year. Marking the milestone are a multitude of special performances of his works around the globe. Atlanta is blessed with a couple of opportunities to hear some of Reich’s signature pieces.
This Thursday, the Georgia State Percussion Ensemble led by Stuart Gerber will present a free concert at the Rialto Center for the Arts featuring a complete performance of ‘Drumming’ (1970-71), along with ‘Typing Music’ (from ‘The Cave,’ 1993) and ‘Music for Pieces of Wood’ (1973).
Special heads up: On May 3, Gerber and a host of local players from our town's deeply talented contemporary classical music community will perform Reich’s monumental composition, ‘Music for 18 Musicians’ (1976), at Florence Kopleff Recital Hall at GSU (more later). – Doug DeLoach
