Claypool Gold at Synovus Bank Amphitheater at Chastain Park
CRITIC'S PICK:
Sat., June 20
Claypool Gold, Synovus Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park - Redoubtable, lovable oddball bassist/frontman Les Claypool does triple duty as three of his bands share the overstuffed bill. Primus headlines, as they did last year at this venue. But arrive early for Colonel Claypool's Fearless Frog Brigade and the Claypool/Lennon Delirium who get the funky psychedelicized juices flowing. The Silly Putty-voiced Claypool is sort of the Jack White elder statesman of the groove-heavy, often improvisational, occasionally avant-garde jam rock scene he helped invent. He flits from one project to the next with his popping, intermittently distorted bass lines in tow. This is a lot of music but it all appeals to a similar audience who will leave with their Les Claypool fixation satiated, at least for a while. - Hal Horowitz
