As old Ponce gives way to condos, dental spas, and elective IVs (whatever the hell those are), the Righteous Room is as constant as the North Star. When the jukebox is on, it's pumping the Smiths, Love and Rockets, the Velvet Underground, and more to the tune of clinking beer bottles and friendly banter. It's an unpretentious, not-too-hipsterish, relaxed, genuine neighborhood bar, which is in short supply these days. Be it a quick stop for patrons before checking out a movie next door at the Plaza Theatre, or an after- work haunt, the Righteous Room is where the locals go. The outdoor seating offers excellent front- row viewing of Ponce Life. Their veggie burgers (and their burger burgers) are one of a kind, and you can't beat the drink prices. The staff are friendly and easygoing. True school Atlantans wouldn't have it any other way. less...

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Castleberry Hill, ELLIOTT STREET DELI & PUB offers the neighborhood an underground hot spot for creative music. Brothers Mike and Peter Jakob renovated the space in 2006, and in the last decade the unassuming pub has grown into one of Atlanta’s most influential music hangouts. Bassist Kevin Scott continues to host Tuesday night jam sessions on the pub’s basement stage, bringing in a rotating cast of jazz heavyweights including saxophonists Kebbi Williams and Eric Fontaine. Elliott Street has participated in art celebrations such as Flux Night and hosted work from local favorites such as Evereman. On April 2, the club celebrated its 10-year anniversary with performances from Kebbi Williams and the Wolfpack, who found new audiences in its intimate basement venue. City Councilman Kwanza Hall helped commemorate the pub’s contributions to local culture by adopting April 2 as “Elliott Street Pub Day” in Atlanta. The Elliott Street Deli & Pub is a cultural touchstone for rising musical talent, and a refuge for those seeking quality food, drink, and community. less...

This may be the toughest call to make. As the experienced barfly will attest, one's selection of "best" neighborhood bar relies upon a number of variables. In addition to the customary considerations — friendly service, well-mixed cocktails, cold beer — there are issues of atmosphere to be considered. To expand on the old "Cheers" theme lauding an elbow-bending emporium "where everybody knows your name," it also needs to be a place where you want everybody to know your name.

After careful consideration, here are a few that we think definitely meet those criteria.

In the Poncey-Highland/Va-Hi area, tipplers have long favored a handful of stalwarts. There's the venerable Atkins Park (794 N. Highland, 404-876-7249), with 78 years of history behind its ornate wooden bar. There's Manuel's Tavern (602 N. Highland, 404-525-3447), where politicians, cops, journalists and assorted characters rub elbows. And, for the alternative set, there's The Highlander (931 Monroe Drive, 404-872-0060), with its lengthy menu and always-colorful clientele.

In Little Five Points, the Euclid Avenue Yacht Club (1136 Euclid Ave., 404-688-2582) reigns supreme, with friendly bikers, hippies, head-bangers and multi-pierced goths sampling the suds.

In Buckhead, regulars flock to Mike N' Angelo's (312 E. Paces Ferry Road, 404-237-0949), the long-lived, laid-back refuge for those fleeing the meat-market outside.

In south Atlanta, Spondivits (1219 Virginia Ave., East Point, 404-767-1569) still lures the masses with enormous tubs of frosty beer, ass-kicking drinks and fresh seafood, while the East Atlanta crowd leans toward the funky storefront ambience of The Earl (488 Flat Shoals Ave., 404-522-3950).

It's an embarrassment of riches — what can we say?
