David Kowalski is a master at curating old and new at his store, BRICK + MORTAR, which began as a pop-up at Paris on Ponce before becoming a full-blown shop at Westside Provisions District. Inside, blouses by local designers like Megan Huntz sit alongside home décor items, such as the boutique’s eponymous line of candles. But the antiques and estate-sale finds are what truly shine — and hearing Kowalski’s tall tales about them is part of the fun. He recently acquired an antique model steamboat from Natchez, Mississippi, formerly used in theatrical productions that retails for $1,500. But you can find more affordable gems, like vintage road maps, for a mere $5. Kowalski checks out 10-15 estate sales a week, mostly in the Southeast, so you can always expect to find new, old treasures. 1170 Howell Mill Road, Suite 106. 404-492-9207. www.thisisbrickandmortar.com.

CRYSTAL BLUE’s cosmic rays radiate from the heart of Little Five Points. There you can get all the stones you need for worship, for healing or just to savor the Earth’s beauty. With a huge amount of inventory in the 75 cent-$6 range, Crystal Blue is a great place to purchase meaningful, soul-nourishing gifts at affordable prices. Popular items include amethyst, rose quartz, citrine and selenite, and products on display feature a karmic description of their healing properties. Other items at Crystal Blue include chimes, gongs, sage ($1 an inch) and Tibetan singing bowls (starting at $40). Opened in 1985 in the same storefront it currently occupies, Crystal Blue is onto the third generation of the founding family working in the store; now that’s good karma. 1168 Euclid Ave. N.E. 404-522-4605. www.facebook.com/crystalblue1168.

For more than two decades, Scott Antique Markets has built a reputation as one of the region’s best places to go treasure hunting. Every second weekend of the month, the popular market opens with more than 3,300 booths in two huge warehouses. It’s paradise for antique lovers and vintage thrifters. You can find almost anything in this place, from a centuries-old clock to copper cookware to Persian rugs. For the best selection, get to the market at the crack of dawn to beat out other shoppers. Going early on Thursday can often lead to snagging awesome deals from vendors before they’ve met with anyone else. Thanks to generations of Scotts and their dedication, we have one of the biggest monthly indoor antique shows in our own backyard. less...

Antiquing isn’t all Queen Anne dining room sets, Depression glass, and display cases filled with Hummel figurines. This is especially true at the Biggar’s Antiques in Chamblee, which prides itself on not being “your typical antique store.” Part retail outlet, part prop house for local movie productions, Biggar’s occupies a 100-year-old church, and its facade is plastered with bright tin signs from stores, gas stations, and restaurants of a bygone era. The place is family owned, and a Biggar is always on the clock. From old fixtures and electronics, to back issues of Playboy and baseball cards, there’s plenty for more masculine antiquers to get excited about. At the risk of hijacking a pun the owners already nixed - and for good reason - Biggar’s is better. less...

Somewhere between the pre-WWII Chinese tourism posters and the 19th-century bridal trunk, it becomes clear that KUDZU ANTIQUES has a hard time saying no. This packrat’s paradise covers about 25,000 square feet and hosts an average of 100 dealers in its Decatur warehouse. Looking for high-quality vintage clothes and shoes, primitive furniture, or such kitschy LPs as Music for Tired Golfers? Kudzu’s got it. The staff is laid-back, yet eager to answer questions. Plan on spending a couple of hours browsing when you go, and bring a compass – you could get lost in there and end up for sale in one of the booths a few years from now. less...
