When the nation’s bartenders converge on Atlanta, as they did for this year’s Atlanta Food and Wine Festival, the first destination for drinks and merriment is TICONDEROGA CLUB, tucked into the dark back corner of Krog Street Market. Luckily for us non-bartenders, the club takes all comers. Greg Best, Paul Calvert, and crew keep the cocktail menu concise, but every single drink is like a mini-masterpiece. The Long Bottom Stretch, for example, just may be the ultimate spin on a gin and tonic, incredibly smooth and complex with the clever addition of a splash of Benedictine. The eponymous Ticonderoga Cup, on the menu since day one, rewards intrepid drinkers by being boozy, fruity, and herbaceous, but never too much. And that’s how we feel about drinking at Ticonderoga Club — it’s never too much. less...

If you can't find something to wet your whistle at H. Harper Station, you must be on the wagon. The city's most exhaustive menu of original cocktails is divided up by spirit, from vodka to cachaca to mezcal, with several varieties of Manhattans - including one featuring Pappy for the deep-pocketed - and an assortment of punch bowls for adventurous tables. That's in addition to a hefty roster of classic cocktails, an extensive list of bourbons, and even a decent selection of draft beers. Considering that restaurant owner Jerry Slater is the former mixologist for One Flew South, the focus on cocktails is no big surprise. What is pleasantly surprising is that we've yet to taste a clunker in the bunch. less...

Sometimes a cocktail's name is so off-the-wall high-concept that you've just got to order it, even when you suspect you won't want to finish it. And When I Was Eight at Proof and Provision sounds like just such an irresistible novelty. Charmingly topped with a few colorful Froot Loops, it looks and tastes just like the bottom-of-the-bowl cereal milk you gleefully slurped as a child - if your mom spiked it with high-test vodka. But, rather than create a three-sip gimmick, bartender Nate Shuman has somehow found a way - with the aid of oat grain vodka, orange and elderflower liqueurs, orange bitters, plus cream - to replicate a comforting taste of nostalgia and deliver a creamy, end-of-the-evening dessert cocktail you'll want to savor. less...

Sasha Petraske's local location of his famous New York bar, DRINKSHOP, was not immediately embraced by Atlantans; it was dismissed by some as just another hotel bar with high prices. But few of those cynics noted that Eric Simpkins — an extraordinary local talent formerly mixing at Trois — is tending bar at the NYC import. Simpkins may be soft-spoken, but he's a master at manipulating boutique liquors into artful cocktails that explode on the palate. While the menu is carefully crafted, your best bet is to place yourself in Simpkins' capable hands. He finds out what you're in the mood for, and then creates a progressive experience where each cocktail builds upon the last. The arm garters, ice cubes designed for certain drinks and old-fashioned stemware only make the bar a more unique destination for cocktail enthusiasts craving a little something different. 45 Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd. (inside the W Atlanta downtown). 404-582-5800. www.whotels.com/Atlanta. less...

The art of mixing cocktails has made a quantum leap in Atlanta over the past year, with mixologists presenting us with ever-yummier ways to get our drink on. But the fresh fruit concoctions available at BELEZA make us swoon and drool simultaneously (not pretty, but still high praise). House-made infusions and an emphasis on tropical and often organic fruits take us way beyond the basics. Last season’s watermelon pisco punch was pure summer in a glass, and the grapefruit, gin and tupelo honey martini is the most refreshing buzz around. less...

As if the Cuban drink-of-the-moment didn’t go down easily enough in its classic mint-and-rum incarnation, the passion fruit mojito at the PARK 75 LOUNGE AND TERRACE is an addictive wonder. The refreshing elixir features passion fruit puree, dark rum, mint and soda for one of the best combinations since vodka, limes and tonic. Smooth as they may be, the mojitos are also deceptively potent. Best to take delicate sips of this heavenly nectar while seeing and being seen at the Four Seasons’ swanky, newly remodeled lounge.

Poised beneath the Highland Inn, ECLIPSE DI SOL is as equally suited for party couples to launch their evenings as it is for same duos to radiate bed-head and post-coital bliss. And the drink that will impress that special someone the night before and/or help revive them the morning after is the mint-garnished GRAPEFRUIT AND ROSEWATER MARTINI. Sugary yet tart, this adult martini features a discernible floral bouquet that can cut through the smell of last night’s clothes like sex musk. In other words, it brings a dewy grin to your face. less...

The mint julep is mistakenly thought of as genteel, but a poorly poured mint julep can be either too strong or too syrupy. Thankfully, lively but not rowdy FLOATAWAY CAFE takes the same meticulous care with its spearmint julep as the chefs do with the organic-informed cuisine. Featuring dainty microgreens from chef Anne Quatrano’s own Summerland Farms, infused into pastry chef Rory Moon’s simple syrup, and combined with Basil Hayden’s spicy, woody, 8-year small-batch bourbon, this frosty julep is an aromatic indulgence to mannerly sip. less...
