The first-ever Ladyfest Atlanta, a free festival dedicated to community-based artistic expression for women, is scheduled to run across local venues during March 20-22, 2015.
The volunteer-run event aims to "create a space for female-identifying and gender non-conforming artists of all types to share their work," according to Ladyfest Atlanta's website.
Ladyfest Atlanta, organized by Chelsea Dunn, Nina Dolgin, Verge Bliss, and Stephanie Pharr, is currently looking for volunteers, donations and sponsors, and submissions in almost any field — film, workshops, music, poetry, visual art, dance, and more.
The first Ladyfest occurred in Olympia, Wash. in 2000 featuring support and performances from Riot grrrl-affiliated groups such as Sleater-Kinney and Bangs. Since then, over 100 Ladyfests have taken place across the globe, including three events hosted in Atlanta in 2002, 2004, and 2007, all titled Ladyfest South. Next March's festival will be the first event officially titled Ladyfest Atlanta.
Ideologically, Ladyfests focus on empowering women and combating oppression, sexism, transphobia, and homophobia, according to its website.
