Queen Sheba’s Shebatar release party and beef with CL’s Pride cover

Between rides back and forth to A3C this weekend, I’ve been listening to Queen Sheba’s new album Shebatar — a three-disc retrospective of her live poetry works over the last decade. How she manages to be so vulnerable and fierce at once is beyond me.

She’s also been pretty vocal in her critique of the recent Southern Fried Pride CL cover, upon which she appeared representing the “empowerment sister”:

Uhhhhh... I’m not sure if you picked up a Creative Loafing last week. NOT the one that’s out now but last Thursday the 30th to the 7th. I was on the cover. *Waves hand at roaring crowd to calm down* Yes ... Yes... that would have been cool except the article was degrading and made me and others (more importantly me) a parody for pride weekend.

She goes on to say that the cover story “set civil rights for the gay and lesbian community back about 30 years.” It’s a criticism that’s hard to take lightly while listening to Shebatar, as she details her journey to womanhood, and the personal struggles, sexual and racial identity politics that have come with the territory.

Empowerment sister? No doubt. But seems like using Queen Sheba’s true voice and identity to define the type would’ve been much more authentic than filling in the blanks with a bunch of stereotypes.
