NOTED ACTS
BIG LAZY — Given these days of boilerplate, prefab pop culture, it's pretty damn rare that you actually hear anything truly original. Thank the gods then for Big Lazy, an all-instrumental Brooklyn trio who, while influenced by the past, are in no way beholden to it. Combining Rain Dogs-era Tom Waits, bottom-heavy Link Wray grind, and a certain rockabilly savoir, this guitar-bass-drum trio raises a compellingly inventive racket. Daring, noir-ish music ideal for the soundtrack to the film you wish Quentin Tarantino would ?make. The Earl (Robertson)
CHICKENS AND PIGS — Led by Jeff Evans (probably the most clever songwriter in Atlanta's Redneck Underground), the country-rockin' ensemble Chickens and Pigs sound like what might have happened if Hank Williams Sr. shoved Mick Jagger aside to take over lead vocals and songwriting during the Exile on Main Street and Some Girls sessions. This benefit show (for a leukemia charity) has a special early 8 p.m. start time. Red Light Café (Nicoll)
LUVJOI — This dull, modern-rock quartet hails from Nashville and displays a schizophrenic lyrical tendency that ranges from "why-don't-we-all-just-get-along" songs to typical, high school, locker room musings (sex and paaarty, dude!). Admittedly, Luvjoi has a knack for writing ingratiating hooks, but ultimately the most creative thing about them is their spelling. Smith's Olde Bar (Robertson)
99X BIG DAY OUT - Though the nasty stench of extortion wafts around these sort of shows (as in, "Play our festival or watch us drop your record out of rotation faster than you can say 'Dishwalla'"), it doesn't keep the fans away. Every year, they line up to shell out their 40-odd bucks to see abbreviated (and often lackluster) sets from the latest flavors-of-the-month. Of course, the proceeds benefit some charity or another (in this case, Angel Flight Of Georgia), seemingly making it all OK. This year's lineup includes relative veterans of the circuit (Everclear, Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, Mighty Mighty Bosstones) along with some new faces (Travis, Papa Roach, Disturbed) and others who seem right on the cusp of disappearing forever (Eve 6, Stroke 9). From a strictly musical standpoint, there's certainly stuff worth seeing here Incubus' unique funk/jazz/metal/techno fusion, Travis' melancholy Brit-pop, the Deftones' ominous industrial prog-rock — but just be aware that despite all the on-stage rhetoric you'll probably hear about sticking it to the Man, you'll in fact be subsidizing him. See also Brand New Immortals article, p. 83 and Green Day review, p. 105. Lakewood Amphitheatre (Peisner/Smith/Ware)
MACEO PARKER, FREAK THE JONES -- Like one of his signature sax solos, Maceo Parker's career in funk continues to be a punchy, dynamic stream of energy. As a formative member of both James Brown's legendary horn sections and Parliament/Funkadelic, Maceo has been 'on the one' longer than touch-tone distance calling. In his fifth-decade of funk, Maceo's live energy and fresh studio offerings betray his seasoned years. Openers Freak the Jones are a local power trio that blend funk, rock and soul into neatly wrapped, bite-size nuggets. Tabernacle (Hutchinson/Smith).
