SAT/JANUARY 13
ACOUSTIC VIBRATION APPRECIATION SOCIETY, SUFI BROTHERS — Featuring members of the Larry Keel Experience, Acoustic Syndicate, Snake Oil Medicine Show and Cygnus X-1, A.V.A.S. already has rock solid regional bluegrass "street cred." The objective of this new collaboration, however, is to stretch bluegrass instrumentation into the realms of jazz, Eastern trance and Eastern European klezmer. Featured performer Sarah Alden of the Gypsy Hicks will lend her fiddle skills in the klezmer tradition. Mandolin player Jason Krekel will pull double duty for opening act, the Sufi Brothers Red Light Café (Hutchinson)
DON BYRON — See article. Variety Playhouse (Sarig)
DASH RIP ROCK — Seemingly unconcerned with trends, fads, crossover success or even selling albums, this rollicking New Orleans punk/pop/twang trio just keeps pounding out their good-natured party rock. Shot full of goofy, self-deprecating humor and boasting a songbook that includes Hank Williams and John Fogerty covers, DRR slings off potentially misogynist ditties like "Pussywhipped" and "Rich Little Bitch" with such good-natured charm — not to mention road-toughened tightness — that even the few women in the audience enthusiastically cheer them on. Nobody leaves a DRR show without a grin plastered to their puss. The Fleetwood Mac-ish 13 Stories opens the evening with a ripping tale or two. Smith's Olde Bar (Horowitz/Smith)
DJ T'CHALLA, DIMENSIONZ, FUMBATA, PSYCHE ORIGAMI — DJ T'Challa, on the wheels that keep the party rolling, helps hold together a night of funky hip-hop at the Somber Reptile's Cajun Kitchen. Also featured are the four MC Dimensionz, live funk band Fumbata and the old school dynamic of Psyche Origami's one MC/one DJ. Somber Reptile (Ware)
JENNIFER NETTLES BAND, CAROLYN EVANS — Nettles seems to have settled here at Eddie's. Playing once or twice a month at the club, the limber-ranged vocalist and her band may be overdoing it, but the fans still flock to see her. She's doing an all-ages set at 7 p.m. and a 21-and-up show at 9:30 p.m. Often overwrought vocalizations and steamy ruminations will abound tonight after a brief opening performance by singer/songwriter Carolyn Evans at the late set. Eddie's Attic (Smith)
DIANNE REEVES -- Like Sarah Vaughn — who she pays tribute to on her soon to be released The Calling album — multi-octave vocalist Dianne Reeves shifts effortlessly between genres. She's actually more eclectic than Vaughn — skirting amid jazz, pop standards, Broadway show tunes and even singer/songwriter fare from Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens and Leonard Cohen with grace, style and aplomb. Add some light Brazilian tropicalia left over from her days touring with Sergio Mendes and you have a remarkably diverse performer, flexible and talented enough to make even moldy supper club chestnuts shimmer. Rialto Center (Horowitz)
REVIVAL — Featuring house, hip-hop, soul, funk and rare groove by DJs Kemit and Doc, Revival brings back the feeling of Earwax's legendary 2nd Saturdays. This party is about getting back and giving back to the pure essence of musical worship, featuring a no alcohol/no smoking environment. It's an all-night house party in a former house of God. Two hours prior, beginning at 9 p.m., will be a CD release party (featuring the Digital DJs) for the locally produced acid jazz/'70s soul/rare groove/socially conscious hip-hop Raw Soul IV compilation, "live on arrival before Revival." The Church/181 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. (Ware)
X-IMPOSSIBLES — Their official release party show is not until early next month, but this afternoon the X-Imps offer a free live preview of the mighty unreconstructed '70s-style punk rock songs from their Cargo/Headhunter debut, White Knuckle Ride. The fun starts at 3 p.m. and, oh yeah, the new CD will actually be on sale here, too! Criminal Records (Nicoll)
YOUNG ANTIQUES, BULLY — At last, the two best straight-up rock bands in Atlanta get to share the same bill! The Antiques play pop songs with a volcanic, high-power energy that's expertly directed by their frantic frontman Blake Rainey. Bully performs high-power songs soaked in subversive pop spirit, and mixed with rage and bitter resolve by their oversized and massively voiced leader, Joel Burkhart. Also featured is Charlotte, N.C., trio Poprocket, a jangle-pop outfit a bit like the Smithereens with a touch of the Buckleys in the vocals and the Beatles in the backbeat. Star Bar (Nicoll/Ware)
