Local Music Feature: Delta Moon

Hard-workin' delta-billy blues bandAt the recent Blind Willie's Blues Festival in Thomson, rootsy Delta Moon kicked off the day with an impressive set of originals and a few select interpretations. Afterward, thinking back on the set, we thought we'd shake 'em on down and see what their very favorite blues cover tunes are, and why.

1) "Lovin' in the Moonlight" - Jesse Mae Hemphill: "I love Jesse Mae Hemphill - gotta love a woman feeling happy after a gig and writing a song about inviting her man to make love to her under the full moon," says vocalist Kristin Markiton.

2) "Do the Do" - Howlin' Wolf: "It's fun to sing, play, and dance to, and I even get a wah solo," says Tom Gray, who provides vocals, guitar and keys.

3) "Preachin' Blues" - Son House: "The song has great lyrics with a lot of humor, and we funk our version up. Kristin sings the hell out of it," says guitarist Mark Johnson.

4) "I Want to Go" - J.B. Lenore: "Because it's so tweaked," says drummer Scott Callison.

5) "Shake 'Em on Down" - Fred McDowell and R.L. Burnside: "It grooves well and it's never quite the same," says bassist Jon Schwenke.??
