Sierra Club says EPD is making smog worse

Lawyers for the Sierra Club are appealing a permit the state issued to a company that the club says emits close to 50 tons of ozone-making gases a year within the Atlanta area that doesn’t meet federal clean air standards.

On March 26, state Environmental Protection Division officials issued the permit to Caldwell Tank Alliance, a Newnan-based company that, among other things, paints and treats water towers. The paint Caldwell uses is composed of volatile organic compounds, a key ingredient of ground-level ozone. The appeal was directed to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.??
