Beer Pick of the Week - Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale
A limited release for May 2007, this is the second version of this ale commemorating the brewery’s 20-day suspension for unlawful partying on premises. It promises to be especially bitter, but perhaps time has mellowed the pain. Instead this is an assertive, but well-balanced American strong ale. A spruce and grapefruit hop kick dominates, but a caramel and maple sweetness follows right behind. The malt flavors become more complex as it warms, with spice cake and whiskey notes cutting through the ever-present resin-like dryness, like a fat spleef burning in a northern California pine forest. This one will get under your skin.
Lagunitas Brewing Company, Petaluma, California, 9.28% ABV. Available at Green’s, Tower, and other area liquor stores.
