Georgia: Where politicians' nicknames stick for their entire lives
Welcome to the board, 'Chunk!'
If you follow Georgia politics, you've come across the various men and women who opt to use nicknames in their professional lives.
In Marietta, there's Mayor-elect Steve "Thunder" Tumlin. The Georgia Public Service Commission has Lauren "Bubba" McDonald. There's "Able" Mable Thomas. James H. "Sloppy" Floyd. James "Bubber" Epps. Charles "Judy" Poag. In last year's DeKalb County elections, there was one candidate who included their cryptic nickname — "Angry Taxpayer" — on the ballot. There must be many others.
Gov. Sonny Perdue has made an excellent addition to the list. Today, Perdue appointed Frank "Chunk" Newman to serve as the Third Congressional District's representative on the State Board of Technical and Adult Education.
This is perhaps the best nickname we will come across for quite some time.
