Showtime has posted the pilot of its cancer comedy on-line. What's the prognosis?

The title of Showtime's new dramedy "The Big C" always reminds me of the only funny line from Arthur 2: On the Rocks. Dudley Moore's boozing zillionaire chats with his new, humor-impaired butler Fairchild, who comments that his father died: "The big C." Arthur asks, "Cancer?" and Fairchild replies, "No, he drowned in the big sea."

Showtime's "Big C" is indeed about cancer, specifically melanoma, which strikes a Minneapolis soccer mom named Cathy, played by the beloved Laura Linney. Cathy casts off her mousy, commonsensible ways and resolves to live her final years to the fullest, to the consternation of people around her. "The Big C" premieres on Aug. 16, following the season premiere of "Weeds," but Showtime has posted the pilot episode on-line:
