Omnivore - Root City Market Faces #1: Taryria Ward and Courtney Lee

The Sugar Coated Radical heads to London

The Root City Market, the quarterly pop-up market that features Southern handcrafted goods, was held at the Stoveworks complex on Krog Street last Saturday. My friend Rose D’Agostino and I made a beeline for the rear of the market, where the food vendors were at work. Some faces:

We’d heard that this might be the last opportunity to buy Taria Camerino’s (left) masterful chocolate creations in town. Taria, aka the Sugar-Coated Radical, is moving to London with her partner, Alison Hinson. Taria has been working as pastry chef in some of the city’s most inventive kitchens in the last few years, including Guy Wong’s Miso Izakaya and Ford Fry’s The Optimist. Part of Taria’s unique play with flavors derives from synesthesia, by the way. She was included in an NPR piece on the neurological “oddity” earlier this year.( Sorry about the fuzzy pic. I blame Taria’s intensity.)

Courtney Lee is the owner of Southern Table Provisions, which specializes in gluten-free products. She doesn’t have a brick-and-mortar location. But she does have a booming business, thanks to a contract to operate three kiosks at the Georgia Dome, where you can fill up on pretzels, cookies, brownies, pizzas and sandwiches without going gluten-crazy. Check out 11Alive’s story about her.
