A friend of Dorothy's top 5

Hydrangea Heath and DJ Robert Ansley bring a new monthly dance party to the Village with Dorothy

Hydrangea Heath, a self-described "catfish, "is no stranger to Atlanta nightlife. When she's not performing as a beautiful and bearded fixture at Tossed Salad at Burkhart's Pub or Gurlfrandz at Mary's, she’s out in the audience dancing up a storm. Never satisfied, she's teamed up with DJ Robert Ansley to start a new dance party at 529 called Dorothy.

According to Heath the monthly party is a look toward the past and the present. “The name is a nod to the euphemism, ’Friend of Dorothy,’ and that is a phrase that dates back to World War II when homosexuality was illegal," Heath says. "They used it as code to let others know their sexual orientation. At the same time, I wanted to bring Oz to Kansas, so to speak, encouraging people to dress in club-kid attire and just let loose and be themselves.”

The combo of her experience hosting events with DJ Vicki Powell and Wussy Mag, and her ability to own any stage or dance floor she takes, promises to bring style and pizzaz to 529.

Heath took a few minutes to share her top 5 reasons to click your heels at Dorothy, and to offer some insight into her and DJ Robert Ansley's favorite dance songs and dancers. In the words of Heath, “Love & Biscuits, y'all!!”

Top 5 reasons to click your heels at Dorothy

5. House/techno DJ Robert Ansley will be spinnin' tunes all night. Here is one of my favorite live sets he has done:

4. All walks of life are welcome.

3. It's a monthly industry night.

2. Yet another excuse to turn a fierce look in the middle of the week.

1. There's no place like home.

Favorite dance song

Hydrangea Heath: Well I'm not a DJ, but when I'm getting into drag I like to listen to some of my favorite DJ sets. There is one in particular titled "Cocaine in Paris" by my good friend Bouffant Bouffant from New Orleans. Great mixes of some fun disco/house tracks.

Robert Ansley: It's hard to pick just one, but Daniel Wang's "Like Some Dream I Can't Stop Dreaming" turns heads every time I play it. One of my favorite techno DJs played this record one Monday morning in Detroit after everyone had been up all weekend and it literally changed my life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyCuWIq2PhU

Favorite dancer

Hydrangea Heath: My very close friend and sister-brother, Blew Velvet. Blew is a go-go dancer and is in Atlanta often but travels and dances at parties all over the U.S. They always turn the party usually wearing nothing but a jockstrap.

No value assignedRobert Ansley: I also have to go with our good friend Blew Velvet. I've never met someone who can turn literally anything into a go-go box to dance on. If you ever walk into a room and see Blew serving it on the dance floor you know you're at a sickening party.
