The Busy Bee Cafe has been honored with a prestigious award from the James Beard Foundation. The iconic restaurant in downtown Atlanta has been serving soul food since 1947, and is one of six national recipients of the 2022 America’s Classics Award. It’s bestowed on locally-owned restaurants “that have timeless appeal and are beloved regionally for quality food that reflects the character of its community,” according to the Foundation. Establishments must have been in business for at least a decade to be eligible. In 2020, Food and Wine magazine named the cafe one of the city’s best restaurants, and the place is frequented by the likes of Killer Mike, Kamala Harris, Oprah Winfrey, and Bernie Sanders. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights icons were often seen there as well. ajc.com
