Off to greener (and cheaper) pastures

Students from Georgia are seeking degrees in other countries as college costs in the U.S. continue to rise, a new report says. More than 300,00 American students enrolled in programs abroad in 2019, though numbers dropped slightly in 2020 due to pandemic restrictions.

The cost of going to a university in this country has tripled during the last three decades, says Dr. Jonathan Smith, an economics professor at Georgia State University. “For example, in the state of Georgia, in 2020, roughly the state spent about 50 percent less per full time student than it did around 2000,” resulting in the need for more loans, he added.
