A death-metal violinist sounds more compelling as a joke than a reality, but Joey Molinaro proves otherwise. The Pittsburgh-bred violinist boils down the visceral brutality of black metal into four strings and boot-stomping. The woodsy resonance of his violin strings finds middle ground between an air of Appalachian folk traditions and his lightning-speed rhythms and nightmarish bouts of thrash. Molinaro’s performances show off a breadth of solo talent, from droning electronics to poetry to visual art.
