In Oculus, Melissa Basham turns her eye on … eyes. The painter examines the way eyes show up in both manmade and natural objects. Her hyper-realistic oil paintings dangle small objects in black spaces. In one, our eyes are fooled into believing the spots on the back of a moth are their doppelgangers. In another, a baby blue stares back at us, lifeless, but still somehow on the verge of blinking. Eyeballs show up in masks, feathers, and other unexpected places.
